Peniche is a Portuguese city in the district of Leiria, located in the province of Estremadura.

The name Peniche seems to derive from the Latin word peninsula (paene + insula) which literally means "almost island".

The municipality of Peniche has an area of 77.55 km² and 26 431 inhabitants and is subdivided into 4 parishes.

Characterized by a beautiful landscape and excellent beaches, it highlights the fact that it was an island until the XV century.

Currently it is the stage of several activities, including the World Surfing Championship, at Supertubos Beach.
